This project offered a rare opportunity to showcase art in a residential setting, and to transform a poorly designed and underutilized exterior space into a highly functional and dramatic series of spaces. Sculptor Damon Hyldreth was commissioned to create a fluid counterpoint to the angular geometry of the home and exterior landscape. The blue glass tiled watershape appears as a chasm opened up in the gray concrete while the Ipe-clad walls and neutral furniture and plant palette surrounding the pool and spa keep the focus on the pool. California native no-mow sod on the far end of the property not only draws the eye towards its rich green and provides a space for kids and dogs to run, but uses 50% less water than traditional sod, less fertilizer, and doesn’t require mowing. The plant palette is a mixture of California natives and mediterranean plants.
